3/4: Cofone Places 4th in AC!
Nicko Cofone finished in 4th Place in the 182-pound weight class to earn a State Medal that caps a record-setting season. With his 45 wins on the season, Cofone, along with Wall's Robert Kanniard, set a new single-season Shore Conference record for wins. Cofone's medal performance in AC closes the book on his high school career that also saw him win a pair of Region Medals, including a championship this year, and three District medals, including a pair of titles.
Stanley Wojdylak's run with the Lions also ended in Atlantic City this weekend, finishing one win short of a medal. Wojdylak finishes as the program's all-time wins leader with 133. He won a pair of Region Medals, including a championship this season, and was a 3-time District Champion.

Sophomore Tyler Klinsky won his 2nd consecutive Region Title, and seniors Nicko Cofone and Stanley Wojdylak won their firsts, as the Lions crowned multiple champs at the Regions for the first time since 1974. With their wins, those three, along with 3rd Place finisher Jacob Anderson, will now move on to the State Tournament in Atlantic City. It will be the 2nd trip to the boardwalk for Klinsky, Wojdylak, and Cofone, while Anderson will be making his first appearance.

Middletown North took a decent hit to graduation, losing five District medal winners, including State medalist Thomas Anderson, that combined for 127 wins in 2017. Still, there are nine starters back, and the Lions' strong freshmen class from last year are a year older. Some we saw have immediate varsity success, like State qualifiers Tyler Klinsky and Freddy Luchs, while some are now ready to step into the lineup and make an impact in the slots left by last year's seniors.
Down low, the Lions have the previously mentioned Klinsky and Luchs returning, giving them two proven hammers. Also back is Thomas O'Keefe, who went 13-1 when inserted into the lineup at 106 last season when the Lions bumped up Klinsky and Luchs. Filling out the remainder of the bottom half of the lineup are returning starters Nate Pujols and Joe Cavanagh, while several members of North's talented Class of 2020 vie to compete for lineup spots.
The Lions are strong up top as well, led by returning State qualifiers Stanley Wojdylak, a 2-time District Champion who enters the season with 92 career wins, and Nicko Cofone, who was one win away from a medal in AC a year ago. Three more starters return up here as well, in junior Jacob Anderson, who had his season cut short after suffering an injury in late January, and seniors Kevin McCarthney and Austin Dewise, a District placer in 2016. Also expect to see more members of the sophomore class break into the lineup here, as well as promising freshmen Nico Cerbo and Connor Winz.
It's awfully tough to replace five starters, let alone five starters that placed in the Districts, unless you have some solid depth. Fortunately, that's what North has. Sure they have some hammers back, and they have starters returning that are capable of putting up big years, but it's that deep group of underclassmen that North will look to keep that great balance in the lineup that was the key to last season's success. The Lions made their B-North debut in style last season by winning the title. Their defense of that title gets two big tests early as they travel to Wall on December 20th, and host Long Branch on December 22nd. In addition to the B-North opponents, North also has some big dates on the schedule that include Howell, Hunterdon Central, Piscataway, Seton Hall Prep, and Hopewell Valley that should prepare them for a strong run in the Sectionals where they hope to get another crack at Phillipsburg. Come the individual post-season, the returning four State qualifiers have the Boardwalk Hall experience under their belts now, and will all look to make a run at a spot on the podium.
